Dr. Pamela Cushing: Disabilities and Difference: Speaking the Unspeakable at the Jean Vanier Research Centre

January 23, 2020 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Proudly sponsored by Kings’ University College.

Professor Cushing launched a Research Centre in April 2019, with King’s University College and the Jean Vanier Association in France to mobilize and evolve core insights of Canadian Jean Vanier – the world renowned philosopher, theologian, and humanitarian. As founder of the L’Arche communities, Jean Vanier was a genuine community builder – he built relationships across difference and shared stories that illuminated the value and dignity of his disabled friends. By lifting up people’s gifts instead of their deficits, he taught millions of people how to work against pervasive disablement, rejection and loneliness. As Jean agreed  prior to his death, the JVRC will focus on the disabled and those who want to build community with them, not him.

Cushing will highlight a range of exciting projects by diverse scholars and practitioners that are inspired by, and productively evolve his original ideas. She outlines how the Centre is supporting research and community projects that showcase the transformative potential for our communities of creating more genuine inclusion and connection across differences.
